Fear
We all have something we fear. Sometimes those fears can really get in the way. Sydney is terrified with an overwhelming fear of bugs. As spring approaches the bugs come out. We are again facing this terrible phobia that stops Sydney cold in her tracks and prevents her from enjoying the beautiful outdoors she loves so much. Keep this little bump in the road in your prayers and feel free to offer any advice. We have tried everything we know to do so suggestions are welcomed.

I've been praying about this fear of bugs that Sidney has. I hesitate to offer any ideas because, knowing you and Jim, I think you've probably already thought of these, but just in case.... I have worked with two other children through the years who had that fear. It seemed to me that it was the unexpectedness of what bugs do that was so fearful. The child didn't know when a bug might zoom by nor what the bug would do when it did! The only way I knew to counter that was to try to lead the little one to anticipate with pleasure something flying by, and to know what bugs do. I used ant farms, butterfly gardens, ladybug cages, etc to show the wonder of these insects. The confined area made them seem safer to my kids. Then we would watch out the window to see if we could find whatever it was we had just hatched & observed. Then we would stand in the hallway and see if we could spot one. Next would be a short walk to see if we could see one flying. I can't say this eliminated the fear but it did seem to help, at least as far as I know. There are many, many kinds of kits you can order that can let you raise your own butterflies, ladybugs, dragonflies, ants. The new ant farms use a gel instead of sand and are really fascinating. Praying with you and love you all!
